Remove the Goo Part 2

Doug Hall • November 5, 2025

We must learn to ruthlessly eliminate distractions if we want to regain our peace.

To feel God's presence in our lives, we must remove the goo in our lives- the things that keep us from living in way that seeks God first above all else, with urgency and passion. We live in a world where we must be incredibly disciplined and obedient in order to not turn away to lesser things, things the enemy of our soul uses to distract us from reaching God's best. I know this is so hard, because every time I slow down enough to desire to spend alone time with the Lord, to seek solitude and even to just be still, as Psalm 46:10 exhorts us, I can guarantee an avalanche of things will come at me to try and steal that special alone time.

So what are some of the things I struggle with, and maybe yo udo as well? The clutter and the noise of an always on internet and communications flow is a big one. We struggle with the distractions of technology so much that it leads directly to fractured attention spans, kind of like an information attention deficit disorder, where we are so busy trying to process so much information all day, that we become very poor at being able to concentrate on just 1 thought, 1 conversation or 1 task at a time. We become such good multi taskers that we become lousy attention givers. This hurts our effectiveness and relationships across many different areas of our lives.

We also suffer from mixed motives that hinder us. We feel the weight and pressure of cultural influences driven ruthlessly by AI algorithms that wear us down over time. The result of this is often we say the rights things, while loving the wrong things. We get pulled with the tide even though we know we don't want to go where the tide is taking us. This is certainly not a new phenomena as the Apostle Paul wrote about it very succinctly in Romans 7:15 "I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do." Only removing distractions with great intent can keep us strong enough in the Lord to stay on the right path and to follow His commands which are always for our good. We live in an uber distracted world, where we would rather scroll for hours, watching a puppy play a piano on our mobile device, rather than spend quiet time with God. But if we are to regain our sanity, we are going to need to fight to remove all the goo, and spend time alone with the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. He alone can restore our souls.
