Living Water, Not Broken Cisterns

God knows what we need better than we do- we need to simply accept His free gift.

Jeremiah understood man's proclivity to trade in what's best for what is less. We want things we can take credit for, and we don't value the things of God as much, even if we know they are better. God’s supply never runs dry, but we keep turning back to broken cisterns, or to dry wells. Why would we deny what never runs dry, and turn back to what can never satisfy? Jesus is the living water, and He never runs dry!

"Has a nation ever changed its gods? (Yet they are not gods at all.) But my people have exchanged their glorious God for worthless idols. Be appalled at this, you heavens, and shudder with great horror,” declares the Lord. “My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.”- Jeremiah 2:11-13

God gives us what’s best, and in our foolish pride, we don’t want it because it didn’t come from us. So we take control and create something of our own doing that can never satisfy. We trade in The Creator for created things, like when the Israelites traded in the glory of God and instead worshipped a golden calf, an image of an animal that eats grass. Likewise, we trade in Jesus who is the Living Water, the only One who can satisfy our soul, for a broken cistern that cannot hold water, a metaphor for something incapable of satisfying our soul. Why? We don’t need to. We just need to accept God and let His love, mercy and grace wash over us! God's ways are better and that should be a reason to celebrate, but in our foolish pride we often don't like it very much because we want the glory that is rightfully His for ourselves.
