Good can be the enemy of great. Alignment is critical.

Busyness is not always a virtue. In fact it can be destructive if it keeps us out of alignment.

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself ? Tell her to help me!”

41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”- Luke 10:38-42

These verses are fascinating. The deep level of teaching in these verses is truly astonishing. Martha was doing a good thing by cleaning the house and preparing the food to celebrate Jesus‘s arrival, but Jesus points out that Mary was doing the best thing, just being still in his presence and sitting at his feet. The story tells of our human nature to always choose busyness and lesser things in Martha’s case over the best thing which is just being still in the presence of Jesus. It teaches how we must ruthlessly eliminate distractions and understand that there’s nothing better for our soul than just putting Jesus as the top priority in our life. Of course we eventually have to make the food and prepare the house, but the alignment is what is being emphasized in the story.

Mary put Jesus first, while Martha put being busy first. Of course Martha was mad at her sister Mary for not helping her, which we can all understand, but Jesus says what Mary was doing was better. So do you put the chores and distractions of this life above Jesus and choose lesser things over the best thing? Are you playing to an imaginary crowd or a false narrative that says busyness is a requirement for validation? Or like Mary are you learning how to seek Jesus above all else? When you do, everything else falls into place as your soul finds the contentment it’s searching for. Alignment is key. Don't let good things get in the way of great things. Being still in the presence of God is a great thing. Everything else is a lesser thing.
