C.S. Lewis Quotes- No Apathy Allowed

We must guard against the warfare of the enemy and one of his greatest tools is spiritual apathy.

"Middle-aged apathy makes for great campaigning weather."- C.S. Lewis from The Screwtape Letters

I find The Screwtape Letters one of the most fascinating works in Christian Literature. It is written from the devil's perspective about how he deploys his demons to trip up and deceive the human race and to ultimately capture their souls for his eternal damnation trap. 2 Timothy 2:25-26 talks about the devil's plans to take us captive when it says "Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, 26 and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will. "

The quote above by Lewis is very subtle and scary in it's description of how the enemy plays on our middle-aged apathy, defined as a period of a laisse-fair attitude towards the spiritual realm, when many have obtained the fruits of their labor in the form of worldly wealth and comfortability, and they are sitting ducks in this mindset for the enemy to lead them right over a cliff to destruction. They mistakenly think that somehow their worldly success will manipulate their final destiny and don't realize that the mortal enemy of their souls has them right where he wants them- focused on worldly pleasures and comfort rather on the eternal pursuits of the Kingdom of God. Scary indeed! We need to fight this battle in prayer mode with great alertness and clarity about keeping our focus on God and not on the false idols of this world that can never last or satisfy.
