C.S. Lewis Quotes- Humility

Humility is a tough thing to figure out- If you think you're humble, you're probably not.

C.S. Lewis is one of my favorite Christian writers of all time, and he has many quotes that are full of wisdom and guidance for successful living and to help us understand how to apply deep biblical truths. We will look at some of these over the next few weeks in hopes they bless us mightily as we learn to apply them to our life as seen in context of scripture. Here is a good one to start with: "Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less."

Proverbs 22:4 backs this up when it says "Humility is the fear of the Lord; its wages are riches and honor and life." Humility is a tricky thing to really grasp. If we think we're humble, we're usually not. However, we also shouldn't let the devil trick us into feeling like worthless tools either. C.S. Lewis gives us a good guideline above that seems like a reasonable middle ground- don't think less of ourselves but think of ourselves less. This seems more relevant now than ever with the social media landscape always tugging at us to seek affirmation from the mostly unknown masses. But God sees us and He knows us. We don't need to worry about ourselves and how popular we may be. Our affirmation from the Lord gives us all the security we really need.
