An Insatiable and Infinite Appetite
God is the only One who can fill the longings in our soul.
"As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?" -Psalm 42:1-2
Our hunger is infinite, and nothing less than the infinite can satisfy it. All finite things leave us restless, but in Christ, the fullness of God has come to meet our longing.”- Hans Urs von Balthasar
As we see from the Psalmist above in Psalm 42:1-2, we all have a thirst and a hunger that only Christ can fill. The longing deep in our soul is unquenchable apart from Him, though we sure do try to fill it in other ways. In fact, if we're being honest, we often try to fill it in any way other than God! What's the result of that effort on part to self satisfy apart from God? Not exactly contentment. In fact, while today we have more choices to entertain, or distract us, right at our fingertips, the amount of anxiety and depression people are feeling has never been higher, according to much research on the subject. The truth is God truly knows what we need to satisfy us way more than we do, because He created us in our Mother's womb, according to Psalm 139:13
So maybe, just maybe we should learn to seek God out and trust in His plan for us. He alone can satisfy our deepest longings. We do have an infinite desire in our souls for something more, something greater than we have experienced and recognizing that need is the 1st step in discovery. But don't beat yourself up, this longing for finding contentment apart from God has been going on since the beginning of time.
Let the Prophet Jeremiah tell you about what God thought of the people of his ancestors in Israel who kept turning their backs on God: "This is what the Lord says: “What fault did your ancestors find in me, that they strayed so far from me? They followed worthless idols and became worthless themselves. They did not ask, ‘Where is the Lord, who brought us up out of Egypt and led us through the barren wilderness, through a land of deserts and ravines, a land of drought and utter darkness, a land where no one travels and no one lives?’ I brought you into a fertile land to eat its fruit and rich produce. But you came and defiled my land and made my inheritance detestable." "My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water." Jeremiah 2: 5-7,13 We do have an infinite and insatiable appetite for more and like the Deer that pants for streams of water, so do our souls long to be quenched. Ask God to do. He is the only One who can.
