We Were Made For Community

We need each other more than we know.

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God."- Matthew 5:9

Jesus taught unity in a world of division. He says “blessed are the peacemakers,” in Matthew 5:9. He came to help bridge a gap between Jews and Gentiles, between the rich and the poor, between religious zealots and common folks. His main message was tolerance and love, not anger and hate. In fact, He hated the haters! Well, here we are some 2,000 years later and the world is still divided today and so His message is still true today- We need unity not division. We need love and not hate! We need forgiveness and mercy, not condemnation.

The world has become like a giant Jerry Springer Show, where people are filled with anger and hatred for anyone they disagree with. There is very little civil discourse, and people are so dug into their positional foxholes that they would rather lose a friend than listen to an opposing viewpoint. This is so tragic. We must ask ourselves how did we get here? We have been the target of a constant, unrelenting manipulation from algorithms that are designed powerfully to manipulate us into a certain belief system, with little to no room for compromise. We are witnessing the end result of these campaigns, a total breakdown in communication around shared thought. History has shown this to be a very scary prospect. When people stop listening to others ideas, bad things happen. We need to all unplug from the grid from time to time to reflect on what is happening and how we can make a positive difference. Meeting with people face to face instead of on social media is a good first step. We are built for community and we need to be around each other in a physical sense, not ostracized in our social media cocoons. We don't have to agree to get along, but we should love each other enough to at least listen to someone else's opinions. God help us if we continue on our path of isolation and retraction from historical community interaction. We will all be worse off if that trend continues. Lord, remind us how much we were built for community and to a peacemaker wherever we are, each and every day. The world is desperate for Peacemakers!
